I don’t really like classical music, but Medici.tv is an awesome Dot TV. I found a lot of video on there that didn’t have to do with Classical music which is great. I hope in the future many more Dot TV’s are developed in this fashion with a wide range of content. After many months of reading this news blog, I’m starting to really see the dot tv picture. I can imagine everything from race cars to Broadway shows, with people like me choosing the camera angle or perspective they want, choosing the announcers, really customizing their viewing experience. Medici.tv is unlike any dot tv I have seen so far. I hope U4H will continue to develop and bring awareness to Internet Television and Dot TV. I hope Dot TV’s will also remain pure and commercial free, perhaps figure out a way to make money with advertisements that isn’t so blatantly offensive.
“Four operas, four directors”. The response to this singular artistic idea is Wagner’s Tetralogy produced in 2000 on the stage of the Stuttgart Opera under the direction of Austrian conductor Lothar Zagrosek and filmed in 2002-2003. Iconoclastic and experimental, this Tetralogy created a sensation.
“The Rhinegold” (the Prologue) was entrusted to Joachim Schlömer, «”he Valkyrie” to Christof Nel, “Siegfried” to Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito, and lastly the last day of the Ring, “The Twilight of the Gods” to Peter Konwitschny, a regular performer of Wagnerian works.
In front of an excited audience in the Berlin Philharmonic concert hall, Rolando Villazon performs arias from the Bel Canto repertoire by Donizetti, Cilea and Mascagni. He also lets himself be filmed and interviewed backstage where we see him, like a caged lion waiting for the second part of the performance.
Next you have “Il Trovatore,” one of Verdi’s best known and most popular operas. The Scala started its Verdi year in december 2000. The cast of this opulent production is all italian, featuring Barbara Frittoli, Violeta Urmana, Leo Nucci and Salvatore Licitra (Il Trovatore) – a young tenor who was discovered by Riccardo Muti who conducts the Scala Orchestra brilliantly.
Special event!!!

This week, medici.tv offers you two beautiful films with the renowned Hagen Quartet.
The Hagens are siblings, two brothers and two sisters, born in Salzburg, who started to play music together when they were in primary school. One of the sisters did not continue, but the three others, Veronika the viola player, Lukas the violinist and Clemens the cellist, continued with Rainer Schmidt on second violin.
Filmed when they were just beginning, the Hagen Quartet shows impressive maturity in “Death and the Maiden” by Schubert. Their sound, pure and finely cut like a diamond, was already breathtaking.
Before an audience in their home town of Salzburg, the Hagen Quartet perform a highly inspired Ravel Quartet. Splendid sound and great musical intelligence as always: a real pleasure.
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of his death, medeici.tv pays tribute to Sir Yehudi Menuhin.
The Violin of the Century
Filmed by Bruno Monsaingeon at home, in Greece, Yehudi Menuhin tells the story of his life. To leaf through Yehudi Menuhin’s photo album is to cover the musical history of an entire century. The countless archives that compose this film are a treasure-trove. Also featuring in this film are Furtwängler, Fricsay and Karajan because he was conducted by the greatest conductors, or Rostropovich, Fischer-Dieskau and Gould because he played with the greatest musicians ! An exceptional document.
Follow this example for future Links and corresponding movie clips: http://www.medici.tv/#/movie/127/
Menuhin and Oistrakh
A friendship that withstood the iron curtain was born in 1945 between Yehudi Menuhin and David Oistrakh as this concert shows us where they play Bach’s Double-Concerto, filmed in the Salle Pleyel in Paris in 1958, with the RTF Chamber Orchestra conducted by Pierre Capdevielle. Outstanding. (/#/movie/563/)
Menuhin in a state of grace illuminates Beethoven and Bach.
As a child, at the age of eight, Yehudi begged his teacher to work on Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, the same one he performed one evening in 1962 at the International Concert Hall, with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Colin Davis. Bach’s Third Partita completes this marvellous programme. (/#/movie/185/)
Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto
This is one of the most surprising images, that of Yehudi Menuhin playing Meldelssohn, filmed in Charlie Chaplin’s studios in Hollywood in 1947 and conducted by Antal Dorati with the Hollywood Symphonic Orchestra formed especially for the occasion. The performances of Hungarian Dances No.5 and No.4 by Brahms that follow, perfectly reveal the agility of Menuhin, accompanied on the piano by Adolph Baller and Antal Dorti himself. (/#/movie/159/)
New on Medici.tv
A music lesson by the great Austrian conductor Karl Böhm, with Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony and Dvorak’s Ninth.
This invaluable document filmed during the rehearsal of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony shows an infinitely demanding conductor and therefore rarely satisfied: he works on every detail, constantly attentive to cohesion. Yet there is nothing cold or clinical in the concert that follows. Passionate and focused, his “Seventh Symphony” by Beethoven is overwhelming.
A shock between two worlds? Karl Böhm, the most emblematic conductor of the Old World, heads the “New World Symphony” by Dvorak. A shock? No, rather a beautiful encounter and it is hard to imagine that Böhm was 84 at the time of this recording filmed in May 1978 in the large concert hall of the Musikverein in Vienna !
Medici TV is great. Really enjoy this DotTV.
